Overcoming Fear and Doubt in the Creative Process

Hello! For my friends who observe Chinese New Year, Gong Hey Fat Choy and Gong Xi Fa Cai! To mark this New Year, I am happily launching today a new website! You will notice that it has been streamlined to showcase the upcoming music releases and tours. Please check it out! We are now entering the year of the Fire Monkey, known to be a time of rapid change. As I look at the year ahead, it seems that way for me – lots of growth, expansion and possibilities. My team and I are laser focused on the joy of bringing my music to Asia through the upcoming “I Am Light” tour (theme: “Ignite Your Inner Light”), then to the world, where the message is “Find Awakened Presence Everywhere” in my global “Yoga Bomb” tour. If you tend to be easily distracted, this year will grace you with the opportunity to practice being focused on your goals while following your heart’s joy. I am cheering you on! From my creative Devi cave (aka my music studio) where my “I Am Light” EP is taking shape, I was reminded the other day of how the creative process is cyclical, with ups and downs on the way to completion. As a yogi, I often reflect upon the wise…

The Universe Has Your Back

Healing: A Return to Wholeness In all my creative work – be it a musical composition, a text, a painting, a performance, or a video production – I start with an inspiration. That feeling leads to an idea which fuels my artistic process. I have a plan or a sense of what I want to create and do my best to honour the muse and see the vision to completion. But in the course of executing the idea, I encounter the unexpected and end up with an artistic work that usually ends up better than I had originally imagined. This is because I don’t see unexpected challenges as obstacles, but rather as opportunities. I am also not attached to my initial idea of how I think things should be. Does the seed know how it will look when it flowers? Life is a mystery unfolding. As a yogi and meditator, and as one who has gone through an extraordinary healing process after being paralyzed for four months due to a severe spinal injury, I feel a strong affinity for the phrase “I’ve got your back”. The exercises that make up the practice of Hatha yoga were designed thousands of years ago to gradually purify the subtle channels of energy that exist within our body/being. The spine…

I Feel Like A Bird That Has Her Song

Happy Sunday! Here in Toronto it is a gloriously sunny and warm day, full of possibilities. As the “Yoga In the Nightclub” music video came to completion this week, and with the “Shanti Om” music video now in post production, I have spent the past five days facing my next creative task: writing and producing my next show! I am thrilled. Though I have absolutely loved the experience of directing and producing my music videos alongside my co-director Adam Nathan and my executive producer (now husband!) Rishi Deva, I am really happy to be back at the helm in creating my live performances. This morning I woke up so happy and said to Rishi, “I feel like a bird that has her song and a flower that has its perfume!” As I dive into the world of creative artistic possibilities of sound, vision and movement, it is now Rishi’s task to continue developing his very essential marketing plan so that we may secure great exposure for the fabulous music videos, before we can share them with you. To us, there is no point after all our hard work – and the tireless generosity of all our volunteers that made the videos possible – to simply stick them up on YouTube and hope people see them. It…

Techniques of Lasting Art: What Can Picasso Teach EDM?

THREE KEYS TO LASTING ART: CREATIVITY, TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE Recently, I was at IMSTA (International Music Software Trade Association) FESTA, a free trade show at Ryerson University School of Media in Toronto. There, I attended a panel workshop on electronic dance music (EDM) during which an MC said you don’t need to be a musician to produce music. In last week’s blog, I shared that I disagreed with this statement. In it, I explored how sound literally creates our physical world, and as such, why it is important that musical artist know what their creative choices are manifesting. This week, I would like to look at the three keys to lasting art that I discovered during my architecture degree at the University of Waterloo – creativity, technology and culture – and how they apply to music and art today. During the IMSTA event, I took the mic and encouraged musicians to be inspired by Pablo Picasso. Known as the co-founder of the Cubism movement, Picasso (1881-1973) was a brilliant Spanish modern artist. Though he was skilled at a broad range of art forms including sculpting, stage design, poetry and playwriting, he was most known for his painting. An immensely naturally gifted and prolific artist, he pushed the artistic envelope by challenging status quo with fresh interpretations…

Being Part of Something Beautiful

Hello friends, I have barely had time to look at the computer this week as we are full tilt on video production. I am currently making a costume for one scene I call “Sci-Fi Disco Heaven” for the Yoga In the Nightclub music video. I think of this costume as a cosmic flower. It will be white pvc and silver organza with boning to make it rigid in places. I thought you might like to see some of the creative process. Here is the sketch I drew of how I wanted the costume to look.   Here I am developing a pattern piece for the costume from handouts for my YEM: Yoga as Energy Medicine workshop. How perfect that it is being built from these on my yoga mat.   Here it is being fitted. And no, the sweatpants are not part of the costume! 🙂   A background in architecture and a love for fashion come in handy! I would also like to invite you to be a part of the video, to join a project that brings yogic consciousness into the pop mainstream. As you know, my deep love is sharing the amazing gift of this life with others through teaching yoga and writing, producing and performing music that inspires. The intention in making the video is…

A World of Sound, The Voice of the Divine

Hello Friends, As you may know, I am in the thick of the creative process finalizing my new album. This album is a nod of gratitude to the yoga community for the support I have received over the years, and of recognition of my deep spiritual roots there. The album uses my independent hit single “Yoga In the Nightclub” as a point of departure. The album includes traditional Sanskrit chants, original pop songs, anthemic dance tracks and expansive, spacious soundscapes that allow listeners to rest in the lap of the Divine. The creative theme for the album is “Songs to the Divine Mother”, an expression of gratitude to my guru Amma. The release party is fittingly on Mother’s Day weekend, at 8pm on Friday May 11 at the Yoga Sanctuary at 2 College Street (at Yonge). All ages are welcome, and kids under 6 are free. Advance tickets are available at my online store Positive Possibilities. There will be an early bird special, so make sure you order yours early. Full details will be on my websites soon. I hope to see you all there! I feel like I am in a creative cave as I create sounds to produce songs in my music studio. For me, it is a fully engrossing process. A friend from Montreal is in from Toronto and asked me to come to his…

Ask Parvati 40: Distractions – Keeping Your Eye On The Prize – Part 2: Is It An Opportunity, Or A Distraction?

(Continued from Focus, Discipline and Courage)   Every moment in every day counts. It is a valuable and powerful asset that we can use to build our dreams or squander our joy. We each have our own way to remain focused on our goals. Some will journal while others will visualize while others will self-talk and perhaps others do a combination of those. Whatever works for you, put that first in your day, every day. Make sure your goals are right up front and central in your life. Every day, give your life to yourself fully and completely, so you may serve the world. A closed hand cannot receive and an empty heart cannot give.   This brings to mind basketball. I enjoy basketball. The players have an agility and rhythm that I also see in dancers. The athletes in this game can at times seem to transcend time and gravity in a way that amazing artists can do. If you have been to a basketball game, you know that when a player is given the chance for a point shot, fans in the stands just behind the basket often furiously wave brightly coloured or neon wands to distract the shooter.   Sometimes it can feel like life is doing that to us, waving colourful, distracting…

Ask Parvati 29: Art As Soul Food – Part 3: The Source of Creativity – Ego or Selflessness

PART 3: THE SOURCE OF CREATIVITY: EGO OR SELFLESSNESS (Continued from The Power of Intention) Some people create art through pain and tension. Some thrive on tight deadlines and panic. Others need relaxed quiet in which to create. Though I can meet a painful situation and create, I tend to use the creative force to move through the pain towards expansion. Though some artists rest in pain and seem to need it to create, pain to me is passing. At best, it is a catalyst to propel me towards healing. It is not an end in itself. When I wrote the song for 9/11, the pain I witnessed and the compassion I felt cracked open a well of goodness and interconnection. I could have written about injustice and anger, but more sincerely for me, more powerful for me was the call to rest in the field of interconnection. I have written angry songs, judgmental songs, indignant songs, sad songs and happy songs, but if they do not come from a place of sincerity and honesty, they never make it past my song book and into a recording. I am very picky that way. For me, art is a spiritual practice, a way to challenge my ego and grind it down, so that it dissolves back to the…

Ask Parvati 29: Art As Soul Food

ART AS SOUL FOOD Dear Parvati, I have been thinking about creative expression and how not all expressions are expansive. I recently had a pop song stuck in my head (Adele’s “Someone Like You”), and realized that the song is just glorifying the idea, amplifying the energy, of remaining stuck holding on to something instead of moving on with life. Then, last week I was in a shoe store and I heard Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro”, and while it was catchy, I also felt a strong sense of unease in my body at being exposed to these sounds, and was deeply relieved to get out of there. There are other artists whose music makes me feel good, like Eva Cassidy or Chicane. Your music feels really good and nourishing to me. Some classical music feels good, but not all. Good energy doesn’t seem to be tied to the genre of music or even to the words (there are songs with apparently positive messages that feel deeply uncomfortable for me). So how do we know when a work of art of any kind is nourishing our spirit? How do we know when engaging with a song or other work is taking us off path? And how do we know when our creative impulses are in service to the…

WHY YOGA IN THE NIGHTCLUB

I am often asked what inspired me to bring yogic expression into the club scene. I answer easily. Yoga In the Nightclub is a natural expression of who I am as a musical artist and dedicated yogini. Yoga is not a physical practice but a way of life. It is about learning to be present in all one does, to see the divine here, now, in this moment. As such, yoga is everywhere. It is about feeling connected to something much greater than our limited ego or will. It is about being in service to life, feeling interconnected to that very life force. Yoga In The Nightclub is a celebration of life and a reminder that we can find awakened presence everywhere.

Yoga in the West is mostly known as a series of bendy physical exercises. Yet there is much more to it than fitness. Yoga’s systematic breath and body exercises, designed to clear the subtle channels in our energy system, prepare us for meditation, through which we may experience a life inspired by our interconnected, multidimensional true nature. Our body, that once was seen as “mine”, is no longer our identity, but a gift on loan from the divine. We care for it, but we are not attached to it. The practice of yoga offers us the opportunity to experience the transmutation of matter into pure light, embody the multidimensional and rest in the eternal.

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED

Hatha yoga, the physical practice of yoga, is just one of many aspects of yoga, which range from selfless service to astrology and prayer. The Sanskrit word “yoga” most simply translates to “union”, implying that the practice of any yoga will bring together our perceived sense of separateness. As a whole, yoga is an ancient science of life. It is a practical method of shedding excess and bringing us back from the self-delusion of separation from the divine so that we may realize our inherent interconnection to and ultimate oneness with it.

As we begin to understand that yoga is everywhere, we come to see how we are all connected in vast ways far beyond the limitations of our personal will and ego. What I do affects you, and vice versa. We are one earth family. At the heart of it all, we share the same heartbeat. Breathe to be. We are one.

AWAKENED LIVING

When we are open, life blossoms, just as a flower opens to welcome the morning sun.  We see that the sun, though it is millions of light years away, has a tender yet powerful relationship with the flower, as do the rain and the clouds. From this perspective we see that we are part of the whole. Life is a symphonic masterpiece with which, when we are open, we are completely resonant.

As we come to understand our oneness, we can revel in it with wonder and joy. We can consider in awe how immense it all is. We can let go of the idea that an illusory, isolated sense of self could possibly be in control, and open to an exquisite unfolding of life in absolute perfection. Our actions become not about “me” but about the whole. Each moment is integrated within the whole. No one decision is separate.

When we begin to see that each decision we make affects not just ourselves but everyone and everything on the planet, we act with more compassion. When we have more compassion, we realize the impact of our actions and we naturally want less and practice more kindness. As stewards of the Earth, we each are called to learn to live in harmony with ourselves, each other and our planet. We all breathe the same air and live on the same living organism, our planet. Varied in race and creed, we are all one family, children of the same mother, the planet Earth.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR GRACE

In each moment, there is infinite grace. By becoming more conscious as we practice yoga on the mat, at work, at play or in the nightclub, we let go of the unnecessary and develop greater internal spaciousness which blooms throughout our lives. In this space new life and possibilities arise.

As we rest our awareness on the simple purity and grace of the breath, we realize - we are alive! We let go of wanting things from the future and the past and open to what is here and now. We feel as vast as the sky and rooted in the richness of this moment.

When we “breathe to be”, we understand our interconnection. We see that we are not the doers but a part of the whole, the same energy that is in the flowers and in the stars. We know that our essence is divine - from which we have come, to which we return.
