WORDS: LIFE IN THE POSITIVE POSSIBILITIES

Shame: From Shadow to Healing

Namaste, As the snow melts and mud dries, spring cleaning can reveal areas of our lives or aspects of ourselves we might not have wanted to see, much like we may pick up a board that has been on the ground all winter, and discover slugs underneath it. It is natural and healthy in this time to bring to the light that which has been hidden in the dark. That is why this week I would like to explore an emotion with you that is often left in the shadows: shame. John Bradshaw, author of the important book Healing the Shame That Binds You, outlines two kinds of shame. Healthy shame provides balanced remorse for things you do, think and say that do not support your highest good or the good of all. It is part of your human nature as it helps you flourish, learn and grow. However, toxic shame holds on to “mine” and binds you to harmful behaviours. It thwarts and undermines your brilliance, joy and fulfilment. The roots for toxic shame can be traced to your youngest years, when your true self may have been judged as not good enough by your primary caregivers. I deeply believe that people do the best they can at any given moment. There is no need…

The Power of Your Soul Voice

Namaste, Happy Easter and happy spring! Spring is here and with it comes greater warmth, longer days and more light. It’s a joy to see nature awaken! With every change in season comes a change in the sounds around us. Birdsong is a definite feature in spring! As a musician, I am acutely aware that every season has a particular sound palette. Not only do I witness this change externally in my environment, but as a singer, I also experience this change internally. This spring, I find my voice more open and bursting with new life as I am in the studio again finishing new compositions for you to hear. As such, I was happy when I learned that April 16 is World Voice Day, a day very close to my heart. It is my great love to give voice to insights that arise from meditation and life-changing events such as singing at the North Pole, and a miraculous spinal healing. All of my work, whether it is music, yoga, words or activism, is about being a surrendered instrument. For that reason, I would like to share this week about what it means to give voice and how it is key to your health, happiness and wholeness. Much of our developmental information happens in our early…

Spring Cleaning to Inspire Change

Namaste, Even though we may say we want change, many of us are actually deeply afraid of it. Though we may outwardly express a hope for something new, inwardly we may be in resistance. Holding on to old patterns in our hearts, minds and actions, we find ourselves too often in the same situations over and over again, without the transformation we had anticipated. We may blame circumstance, others, even the divine, for the events in our life. Or we may blame ourselves, getting stuck in self-criticism instead of opening to solutions. Try and try as we may, here we are again, right back to where we don’t want to be! So what is going on? How does change happen? When you want something to change, your tendency may be to see the problem as ‘out there’. So you go out and try to fix the situation or a person to make it to your liking. Sooner or later you discover that this leads to further unhappiness because you don’t have the power to change someone or universal conditions. You can only change yourself, which means being present. Change does not happen ‘over there’, but exactly where you are. When you pause the ongoing inner wanting for things to be different, you find that the steps…

What Does It Mean to Surrender?

Namaste, It is spring and the force of nature is churning. As the trees sprout leaves and flowers burst into life, you may feel an impulse to get active in an attempt to shed physical and psychological winter weight. However, it’s easy to overdo these times of seasonal transition and end up with colds, allergies and other physical symptoms, ways your body reminds you of the need to slow down and learn to let go. Because the mind tends to only know two ways of thinking, to move towards something it likes or to move away something it doesn’t, the tendency is to push at what it no longer wants. But pushing or pulling at life is like trying to move mountains. Sooner or later you end up exhausted and come to recognize a force in life that is much greater than your limited ego or will. Whether you end up flat on your back with a broken heart, a massive cold, a lost job or just plain wrung out from too much effortful living, the wise words “let go” or “surrender” start to come to mind. The notion of surrender can be bewildering. We may associate it with “throwing in the towel”, giving in or even becoming roadkill as someone else’s will rides roughshod all…

Get More Done While Having Fun

Namaste, We commonly use the term “hard work”, as though “work” and “strenuous effort” are synonymous. Our common use of the word labour – to work hard, slave, grind away, toil, struggle, exert great effort – does not suggest much lightness of being. But does hard work need to be hard? I have a committed work ethic, due in part to being the descendant of Canadian pioneers who helped found the country in which I reside. My parents, and those who went before them, were no strangers to the challenges of venturing into the unknown to build lives they loved. Having seen first hand what hard work, dedication and focus can yield, I have not shied away from the tenacious dedication it takes to follow my own dreams and honour an unstoppable creative spark that seems to arise within me. As such, I do frequently work 14-hour days, every day of the week. In the eyes of many, I work hard. Yes, I work very long days with tremendous focus. But to me, I don’t necessarily work “hard”. I am dedicated to getting a lot done with a lightness of spirit, while ensuring I am having fun. The word “fun” may immediately conjure images of leaving the workload behind for a day on the beach or…

How To Keep Focused As You Follow Your Dreams

Namaste, I enjoy basketball. The players have an agility and rhythm that I also see in dancers, seeming at times to transcend time and gravity. One thing I notice at basketball games is that when a player is given the chance for a free throw, fans in the stands just behind the basket often wave brightly colored items, or do outrageous or silly acts, to distract the shooter. Sometimes it can feel as though life is waving colourful distractions at us, bringing forward all sorts of events and happenings that seem to pull our focus from our desired goal. But as a trained athlete knows, focus is an acquired skill: keep your mind in the game and your eye on the prize. Friends and fellow creatives have shared with me that they can sometimes get pulled into other people’s problems or requests, and find themselves giving short shrift to their own work. I have experienced this challenge myself. Distractions always present themselves throughout the day. How we respond to them will separate those who stay focused on their goals from those who don’t. We must consciously choose how to spend our time and where to place our energy. Life is full of surprises and moment-to-moment teachings. As such, it is also important to assess whether an…

The Radical Revolution of Being Yourself

Namaste, One of the pivotal quotes that shaped my life growing up was from one of my favorite musical icons, David Bowie: “The worst trick God can play is to make you an artist, but a mediocre one.” Internalizing my version of his message, my motto became through high school and university that I would rather be an A or an F student than a C student. Living by that belief, I developed two distinct personality traits. Either I would edit myself to please people with niceties, or I would plow through life with a fiery feistiness. Both extremes were fueled by a drive for what I understood to be “perfection”. The tension that lay between these two, and the fervour I put into trying to be “perfectly A” or “perfectly F”, eventually consumed my health and wellbeing. By the end of high school and into my first year of university, I was exhausted and stressed because I was not being authentically myself. Though it took me completing university and facing the rest of my life to figure it out, I eventually realized that I had allowed other people’s voices, wishes and dreams to unconsciously run my life. My feistily polite drive for “perfection” was based on the fear that if I were myself, I would…

Three Ways You Can Cultivate Self-Love Right Now

Namaste, Welcome to the conclusion of my series on the power of self-love to change your life. I hope that, as you have followed along for the past two weeks, you are feeling the unfolding of love within you for yourself, the divine and all things. You always exist within love. May each one of live that reality in every moment! This week, I would like to leave you with some exercises to help anchor self-love in your life. Give them a try today, and every day until you feel your inner well of love is abundantly flowing. I would love to hear from you how you get on with them. SELF-LOVE EXERCISES You are a precious seed in life’s garden. Within that seed exists a beautiful flower. How would you care for that seed? With a pen and paper in hand, find a quiet space to consider the following questions. 1. SELF-CARE: CHOOSE YOUR HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT A seed is best planted in fertile soil that will nourish its growth, where it has plenty of fresh air, sunlight and water. You are that seed. So what environment supports your growth? Are you in a healthy home? Do you have a supportive work environment, circle of friends and family? Are you eating foods that support your health?…

Why Loving Yourself Changes Everything

[Continued from The Power of Self-Love] Namaste, Welcome back to my series on self-love! Please take a moment now to become present, and open to the reality of an all-pervading love. Love is all around, within, always. The very fabric of the universe pulsates at the frequency of love, of joy, of abundance. In each moment we are loved beyond what we could ever imagine. We only believe otherwise because of our own distorted thoughts, wounds and attachments. So why do we hold on to feeling disconnected, searching for love ‘to fill me up’ from ‘out there’, rather than within? Perhaps it is habit, socialized patterns, a sort of cosmic amnesia that keeps us asleep rather than truly empowered. Perhaps it is easier to blame than take responsibility. There is a subtle power we get from feeling like a powerless victim. It can feel scary to take responsibility for your own happiness, because it requires you to look within and change the things that hold you back from growing. It involves being accountable for your life and letting go of blaming everyone, even your parents, or the universe, for your wounds. The truth is that, at a spiritual level, you have chosen your parents and every aspect of your life. Everything that exists in your life…

The Power of Self-Love

Namaste, I hope you are feeling well and happy! Thank you to everyone who has followed along and responded to my latest posts on manifesting. This week, I would like to start exploring the reality of love and the power of self-love. But before we begin, a quick note that the latest Parvati Magazine, on the theme of “Relations”, is live now! Please check it out and share with your friends. Most of us grow up with the idea that someone “out there” will come along some day to fill us up. Mesmerized by fairy tale myths of a perfect prince or princess who will transform our lives into magic, we looked (and maybe even are still looking) for the one person who would make our lives perfect and bring us the happiness we feel we have been deeply missing. But the reality of love is something different. Getting real about love means learning to face our own lives and look at our values, our hopes, our dreams, our tender places, our relationships with friends, family and peers and most importantly, our relationship with ourselves. If you feel unhappy and down on yourself, trying to find a lasting relationship would be like trying to catch rain with a sieve. It lacks the containment to attract the…

WHY YOGA IN THE NIGHTCLUB

I am often asked what inspired me to bring yogic expression into the club scene. I answer easily. Yoga In the Nightclub is a natural expression of who I am as a musical artist and dedicated yogini. Yoga is not a physical practice but a way of life. It is about learning to be present in all one does, to see the divine here, now, in this moment. As such, yoga is everywhere. It is about feeling connected to something much greater than our limited ego or will. It is about being in service to life, feeling interconnected to that very life force. Yoga In The Nightclub is a celebration of life and a reminder that we can find awakened presence everywhere.

Yoga in the West is mostly known as a series of bendy physical exercises. Yet there is much more to it than fitness. Yoga’s systematic breath and body exercises, designed to clear the subtle channels in our energy system, prepare us for meditation, through which we may experience a life inspired by our interconnected, multidimensional true nature. Our body, that once was seen as “mine”, is no longer our identity, but a gift on loan from the divine. We care for it, but we are not attached to it. The practice of yoga offers us the opportunity to experience the transmutation of matter into pure light, embody the multidimensional and rest in the eternal.

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED

Hatha yoga, the physical practice of yoga, is just one of many aspects of yoga, which range from selfless service to astrology and prayer. The Sanskrit word “yoga” most simply translates to “union”, implying that the practice of any yoga will bring together our perceived sense of separateness. As a whole, yoga is an ancient science of life. It is a practical method of shedding excess and bringing us back from the self-delusion of separation from the divine so that we may realize our inherent interconnection to and ultimate oneness with it.

As we begin to understand that yoga is everywhere, we come to see how we are all connected in vast ways far beyond the limitations of our personal will and ego. What I do affects you, and vice versa. We are one earth family. At the heart of it all, we share the same heartbeat. Breathe to be. We are one.

AWAKENED LIVING

When we are open, life blossoms, just as a flower opens to welcome the morning sun.  We see that the sun, though it is millions of light years away, has a tender yet powerful relationship with the flower, as do the rain and the clouds. From this perspective we see that we are part of the whole. Life is a symphonic masterpiece with which, when we are open, we are completely resonant.

As we come to understand our oneness, we can revel in it with wonder and joy. We can consider in awe how immense it all is. We can let go of the idea that an illusory, isolated sense of self could possibly be in control, and open to an exquisite unfolding of life in absolute perfection. Our actions become not about “me” but about the whole. Each moment is integrated within the whole. No one decision is separate.

When we begin to see that each decision we make affects not just ourselves but everyone and everything on the planet, we act with more compassion. When we have more compassion, we realize the impact of our actions and we naturally want less and practice more kindness. As stewards of the Earth, we each are called to learn to live in harmony with ourselves, each other and our planet. We all breathe the same air and live on the same living organism, our planet. Varied in race and creed, we are all one family, children of the same mother, the planet Earth.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR GRACE

In each moment, there is infinite grace. By becoming more conscious as we practice yoga on the mat, at work, at play or in the nightclub, we let go of the unnecessary and develop greater internal spaciousness which blooms throughout our lives. In this space new life and possibilities arise.

As we rest our awareness on the simple purity and grace of the breath, we realize - we are alive! We let go of wanting things from the future and the past and open to what is here and now. We feel as vast as the sky and rooted in the richness of this moment.

When we “breathe to be”, we understand our interconnection. We see that we are not the doers but a part of the whole, the same energy that is in the flowers and in the stars. We know that our essence is divine - from which we have come, to which we return.
