Peace in a Polarized World

1-monday_color-buddha2_p

I don’t follow daily news that closely. But I get a snapshot of world politics from the things I experience as I move through each day: captions in newspapers and on magazine stands, conversations on Facebook, clips on the radio or on YouTube, and through the atmospheric vibration I touch in my daily meditation practice. I am aware of the recent election results in the United States. I know that there have been clouds of dissention in the ethers for some time. I can see them in the media and sense them in the unseen. Over the past decade, our world has been struggling with increased local and global unrest as well as greater natural disasters.

At this point in my life, I don’t feel a call to follow politics. Not because I am busy and don’t care – quite the opposite. I care deeply. I am simply unconvinced that the answers to the problems we as a human race repeatedly face will be solved by following daily news too closely. I know, as I am sure you do you too, that in every moment, all over the world, people are violently attacked, raped and brutally murdered in wars between nations and disputes between people. There are millions who are in pain right now from profound lack – not just from lack of the basics such as food, water and shelter, but from lack of fundamental goodness, such as kindness, respect and love. We live in a beautiful, yet agitated, confused and suffering world.

Political news is like a weather report. It shows us if the clouds of suffering or the sun of illumination are visible at any given time. It communicates if there is war or peace around the world and if people are distressed or happy. I value this information, yet I also know that clouds of suffering will always pass through as long as people have the capacity for greed, fear, rage and other painful emotions. So I don’t necessarily need to keep too close an eye on the latest events to be in touch with the world.

Just as cloudy thoughts pass through my mind, clouds in the atmosphere and in people’s thinking will come and go, while the sun continues to shine. Clouds are temporary. If I focus too closely on them, I lose sight of the sun that has always been luminous, just simply out of view.

This is similar to what I understand Eckhart Tolle to mean by the collective pain-body and how it is hungry. As we feed our inner pain-body by being judgmental, confrontational, aggressive, violent or through any form of divisive thinking and finger pointing, we in turn feed the collective or global pain-body, which is expressed through wars and other acts of unrest.

This is why, beyond passing weather reports, I am more deeply interested in that which inspires clarity of mind and compassion of heart. I need this, because I – like most of us on the planet – am growing and learning to become more conscious, loving and aware. I know that in order to be clear, I need to feed my mind, heart and soul with things that make me into the most patient, kind, wise and loving person I can be. I rely on that which helps me focus on the light of the sun, so that I may imbibe its qualities and have the greatest amount of compassion to serve those who are suffering from passing clouds or torrential tsunamis.

That focus is what inspired me to found the not-for-profit Parvati.org to protect the Arctic Ocean through the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary, and to dedicate all my musical, yogic and written works to its realization. This week, I put several letters in the mail, including one for Prime Minister Trudeau, another for his wife, and several to cabinet ministers and other Members of Parliament. In them I let them know of the strong support for MAPS I encountered on my travels to Europe last month and how I was repeatedly asked where the Canadian government is on this important issue. Despite repeated letters to Prime Minister Trudeau, I have yet to hear back from him.

I am also calling on US President Barack Obama to ratify the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary before he leaves office, so that the Arctic may be protected from those who may come into power without the planet’s best interests at heart.

I am not concerned with the political affiliation of the government of the day. What matters to me is whether our world leaders act in accordance with the highest good of all. As a Canadian citizen, I have the opportunity to vote every four years. But perhaps more potently, I have the power of choice – as we all do – to give voice every day to the reality of our interconnection, and to hold our elected officials accountable.

letters

As I face the ebb and flow of daily living and witness the consequences of human greed and suffering, I need to make sure that I don’t lose sight of the eternal light – our true nature. Certainly, this is what inspired me to write and produce my single “I Am Light”, to remind us all that we are truly luminous beings, capable of tremendous wisdom and compassion.

As I focus on the source that inspires true understanding and love, I do not deny the presence of the clouds, the suffering and the pain we all can feel. But I do not add to them by feeding my own inner agitation and wanting. Like serving a drowning man, I must make sure I extend a hand to those in need from solid ground. If I jump into the whirlpool, I too will be lost in its eddy and pull. The solid ground I must stand upon is the ground of my inner peace.

I cultivate this necessary peacefulness by learning from my personal role models: spiritual leaders who do not push any particular religious belief, but inspire global change through internal awareness and personal responsibility. Though we are passing through a time of dark clouds of anger and revenge on the planet as a whole, we are blessed to have access to shining inspirational lights such as Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, the South Indian “hugging saint” known as Amma (now wrapping up a Europe tour and coming to North America next week!); and the most famous Tibetan of our time, His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They, among others, imbibe the wisdom-compassion that can bring lasting peace to the planet – if we find the humility to truly listen, learn and live from such precious, timeless teachings.

Here are some quotes from these teachers that I find pertinent at this time:

“Compassion does not see the faults of others. It does not see the weaknesses of people. It makes no distinction between good and bad people. Compassion cannot draw a line between two countries, two faiths or two religions. Compassion has no ego; thus there is no fear, lust or passion. Compassion simply forgives and forgets. Compassion is like a passage. Everything passes through it. Nothing can stay there. Compassion is love expressed in all its fullness.”
– Amma

“If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation.”
– The Dalai Lama

We all get seduced by our mind’s desire to perceive a situation based on what we think we need. This is no criticism. It is simply our human tendency, the way our ego operates. It is how we live to some degree or another until we are enlightened and have remembered that only love is real.

In every situation there are two sides to every story, then that which is really going on. It seems to me that we have become so busy wanting to be right that we need to side with the guy we believe has the most votes, forgetting that we all have the same seeds of ignorance and greed. Not one of us – Palestinian, Israeli, Ukrainian, Russian, American, Canadian, European, Asian, Clinton supporters, Trump supporters, Sanders supporters, Stein supporters, Johnson supporters… – no one has the right to point fingers. We all have shadows and are subject to our own inner clouds. Our inner clouds create the clouds in the atmosphere. The clouds in the atmosphere affect the moods of those on the planet. We cannot help it. We are all interconnected as children of the same mother, our planet Earth. What I do affects you and vice versa.

If we are transparently honest with ourselves, we come to realize that we each have cast stones of hatred and revenge – even just as passing thoughts – at some point in our lives. We all can buy into the clouds and forget the sun. We all err. We all need to make amends with ourselves, with our families, with our brothers and our neighbours. We all can learn to love better, in each moment, of every day, until we have realized that our true nature is not right or wrong – only love.

How easy it is for us justify our desire to make someone right and another wrong! Pointing fingers makes us feel temporarily powerful, and that makes us feel good, like we are on the “right” side of the fence. Yet, if another person is suffering, are we not in some way suffering too? I remember the inspired phrase “there but by grace go I”, which prompted me to write a song by that title that I have yet to produce, but have sung live many times. Maybe we did not bully, or throw stones, but we have the capacity to do so. We suffer if we are on the receiving end of such. We suffer when we think hateful thoughts. We must remember our interconnection that frees us from the tyranny of our ego’s need to create separateness. What is the difference between us? Is it not simply “there but by grace go I”?

Finger pointing only highlights our reptilian brain’s need for conquest and ego feeding. The tendency to point fingers does not illustrate courage, but a weakness in the human psyche that is driven by fear. We all have fears – fear of death, fear of not being loved, fear of not enough – we all fear we won’t get what we feel we need. History shows us that we do not ever get those things by wanting. Only by letting go of wants and learning to live in harmony do we truly find lasting fulfillment.

There can be no external peace in our world until we experience inner peace – peace with ourselves, who we are and why we are here. As I say in my song Precious, “If I want peace in the world, I know it begins with me.” There is way too much finger pointing and defensiveness, and not enough willingness to consider that each of us has the potential for the clouds we see in our outer world. We must find the courage to see our shared humanity and shared suffering in both sides of any situation.

So rather than focusing on disdain, feeling defeated by, or throwing proverbial stones at the people you feel are “wrong”, if you want to be a hero at this time of war and inspire peace, don’t take sides, pick up a gun or post vengeful notices. Have true courage and do everything you can to not get caught up in the storm you perceive that fuels the storm within you, that in turn fuels our global storm. Return to the reality of the eternal light – the sun ever shining, the light of love that you truly are – and make peace with this moment. This moment is all we have. Challenge yourself to touch real power and go deeper within. Move into the now and find it to be holy. The love and healing you deeply seek will only ever be found there. It will never be won through wars or battles of any kind.

Let us aspire to the example of great spiritual leaders such as Amma and the Dalai Lama. Let us show true courage in the face of aggression and act only if from a place of inner peace. We can do it, if we are open, ready and willing. The choice is up to each one of us.

Love yourself.
Love others.
Love our world.
We are one Earth family.

Namaste,
Parvati

WHY YOGA IN THE NIGHTCLUB

I am often asked what inspired me to bring yogic expression into the club scene. I answer easily. Yoga In the Nightclub is a natural expression of who I am as a musical artist and dedicated yogini. Yoga is not a physical practice but a way of life. It is about learning to be present in all one does, to see the divine here, now, in this moment. As such, yoga is everywhere. It is about feeling connected to something much greater than our limited ego or will. It is about being in service to life, feeling interconnected to that very life force. Yoga In The Nightclub is a celebration of life and a reminder that we can find awakened presence everywhere.

Yoga in the West is mostly known as a series of bendy physical exercises. Yet there is much more to it than fitness. Yoga’s systematic breath and body exercises, designed to clear the subtle channels in our energy system, prepare us for meditation, through which we may experience a life inspired by our interconnected, multidimensional true nature. Our body, that once was seen as “mine”, is no longer our identity, but a gift on loan from the divine. We care for it, but we are not attached to it. The practice of yoga offers us the opportunity to experience the transmutation of matter into pure light, embody the multidimensional and rest in the eternal.

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED

Hatha yoga, the physical practice of yoga, is just one of many aspects of yoga, which range from selfless service to astrology and prayer. The Sanskrit word “yoga” most simply translates to “union”, implying that the practice of any yoga will bring together our perceived sense of separateness. As a whole, yoga is an ancient science of life. It is a practical method of shedding excess and bringing us back from the self-delusion of separation from the divine so that we may realize our inherent interconnection to and ultimate oneness with it.

As we begin to understand that yoga is everywhere, we come to see how we are all connected in vast ways far beyond the limitations of our personal will and ego. What I do affects you, and vice versa. We are one earth family. At the heart of it all, we share the same heartbeat. Breathe to be. We are one.

AWAKENED LIVING

When we are open, life blossoms, just as a flower opens to welcome the morning sun.  We see that the sun, though it is millions of light years away, has a tender yet powerful relationship with the flower, as do the rain and the clouds. From this perspective we see that we are part of the whole. Life is a symphonic masterpiece with which, when we are open, we are completely resonant.

As we come to understand our oneness, we can revel in it with wonder and joy. We can consider in awe how immense it all is. We can let go of the idea that an illusory, isolated sense of self could possibly be in control, and open to an exquisite unfolding of life in absolute perfection. Our actions become not about “me” but about the whole. Each moment is integrated within the whole. No one decision is separate.

When we begin to see that each decision we make affects not just ourselves but everyone and everything on the planet, we act with more compassion. When we have more compassion, we realize the impact of our actions and we naturally want less and practice more kindness. As stewards of the Earth, we each are called to learn to live in harmony with ourselves, each other and our planet. We all breathe the same air and live on the same living organism, our planet. Varied in race and creed, we are all one family, children of the same mother, the planet Earth.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR GRACE

In each moment, there is infinite grace. By becoming more conscious as we practice yoga on the mat, at work, at play or in the nightclub, we let go of the unnecessary and develop greater internal spaciousness which blooms throughout our lives. In this space new life and possibilities arise.

As we rest our awareness on the simple purity and grace of the breath, we realize - we are alive! We let go of wanting things from the future and the past and open to what is here and now. We feel as vast as the sky and rooted in the richness of this moment.

When we “breathe to be”, we understand our interconnection. We see that we are not the doers but a part of the whole, the same energy that is in the flowers and in the stars. We know that our essence is divine - from which we have come, to which we return.
