How To Go With The Flow

When we pause to consider for a moment the many ways in which we are attached to doing in order to feel a sense of purpose, we quickly see that we are habituated into thinking that we are the very force that gives us life. We have lost sight of the life force that flows through us to sustain us in each moment. We have forgotten that we are in essence that very flow.

Going with the flow is not passive, but an intelligent recalibration of the notion of who or what is doing. We usually think “I” – a divided sense of self – is the doer. As such, we feel compelled to take charge of this moment, which somehow we perceive as against us. Yet all the while, we are lovingly supported within a compassionate and wise whole.

For many, the notion of surrender, acceptance or “going with the flow” sound like a resignation of our will. The idea of the proverbial “throwing in the towel” to what this moment may bring can even bring up profound, even primal fears. But there is deep, contemplative wisdom in being able to choose such ease. The choice is based on understanding the nature of reality, the way in which we are vastly interconnect, never separate, always within grace.

Flow is not blind and listless, but active and awake. It is a flow-er-ing of consciousness within you as it dances effortlessly within the whole. You, your ego-self, has gotten out of the way.

This way of living is about being in service to the creative flow, a force greater than your individual ego or will. This force is not about you, but arises through you. You are witness to its unfolding. It can have a wide range of expressions, from a gentle lapping wave, to a huge tsunami.

The other day, as I was quietly enjoying my walk to the gym where I work out, my husband noticed a brawl that was taking place in the park up ahead. A group surrounded someone who was being beaten up. As soon as I noticed this, an energy arose through me that led to me running faster than I ever have, down two blocks, right into the center of the fight consisting of five men and one woman. A fierce presence, like a karate cry, arose through me as I commanded everyone to step back and break it up. This force took over, and had only one objective: disperse the violence to ensure safety for all. At no point did I engage in the angry vortex, or even physically touch anyone. The energy alone took care of all that was needed. I was just the body through which it arose. Once the bloody person was cared for and everyone safe, I walked away from the scene back to what felt more like my normal self. I hardly knew what had happened.

Flow is all about life force, which moves, dances, sustains and arises through us in each moment, when we are willing to co-create with it. But it is never about us. Any sense of self that may think it is the force doing, feeds not our collaborative synergy with the flow, but our ego and our sense of being divided from the whole. Of this, we must be careful.

Though flow has many expressions, it will always feel rooted, vital and expansive. It will always be engaged and assertive, whether it is gentle and quiet or fierce and expressive. It will never be pushy or a push-over. It is always a balanced expression of interconnection within the whole.

Contrary to what many of us habitually perceive, life is not happening “to” you. You are an active co-creator in actualizing what is. You are not an isolated island, but part of an intelligent whole. So try this contemplative meditation to help you feel more rooted, vital and expansive in your life and embrace the possibility of going with flow in each moment:

1) Find a quiet place to sit comfortably, so that you can relax without the risk of falling asleep. Allow your spine to be straight, but not rigid. Ideally, you are not leaning against pillows, a wall or the back of a chair.

2) Breathe into your belly, allowing the rhythm of the breath to bring your mind deeper into this moment, into your body, into the feeling of the here and now.

3) Scan your body from the crown of your head to your toes. Without any force or particular stressful effort, go deeper into yourself and feel the connection your body has with your seat.

4) Then feel the connection your breath has with the outside air and how it flows into your body. Breathe in, feel the air and life force feed your body/being. Breathe out, feel the ease of the release. Know that the air you breathe is also connected to all of life, all animals, all humans, all things alive.

5) Take a moment to feel that interconnection between you, life and all things. Feel the immense possibility of life itself. While remaining present to the sensations within your body and the flow of your breath, allow your sense of awareness to expand, to open to this life force that is in you, around you, everywhere. Stay rooted in your body by still feeling the ground, your breath, and include the expansive awareness you also feel. Allow yourself to open to receive this possibility in this moment, feel it in your breath and in your cells. While rest in that presence, say to yourself: “I am. I am. I am.” Feel the possibility of ease and flow, your effortless interconnection within and without.

6) Feel the ease, flow and interconnection in your whole being. Repeat it like you were feeding your cells with this lush, rich, awareness.

7) Should your mind wander on distractions, such as physical tensions, or lingering thoughts, simply notice them and bring your awareness back to your breath. Allow yourself to rest in the words “I am”. Repeat it until you feel you have had enough. Then gently open your eyes, and allow yourself to gently move back into your daily life with ease and flow.

May you live your life in the Positive Possibilities and flow in harmony with your true essence, all of nature and the universe as a whole.

WHY YOGA IN THE NIGHTCLUB

I am often asked what inspired me to bring yogic expression into the club scene. I answer easily. Yoga In the Nightclub is a natural expression of who I am as a musical artist and dedicated yogini. Yoga is not a physical practice but a way of life. It is about learning to be present in all one does, to see the divine here, now, in this moment. As such, yoga is everywhere. It is about feeling connected to something much greater than our limited ego or will. It is about being in service to life, feeling interconnected to that very life force. Yoga In The Nightclub is a celebration of life and a reminder that we can find awakened presence everywhere.

Yoga in the West is mostly known as a series of bendy physical exercises. Yet there is much more to it than fitness. Yoga’s systematic breath and body exercises, designed to clear the subtle channels in our energy system, prepare us for meditation, through which we may experience a life inspired by our interconnected, multidimensional true nature. Our body, that once was seen as “mine”, is no longer our identity, but a gift on loan from the divine. We care for it, but we are not attached to it. The practice of yoga offers us the opportunity to experience the transmutation of matter into pure light, embody the multidimensional and rest in the eternal.

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED

Hatha yoga, the physical practice of yoga, is just one of many aspects of yoga, which range from selfless service to astrology and prayer. The Sanskrit word “yoga” most simply translates to “union”, implying that the practice of any yoga will bring together our perceived sense of separateness. As a whole, yoga is an ancient science of life. It is a practical method of shedding excess and bringing us back from the self-delusion of separation from the divine so that we may realize our inherent interconnection to and ultimate oneness with it.

As we begin to understand that yoga is everywhere, we come to see how we are all connected in vast ways far beyond the limitations of our personal will and ego. What I do affects you, and vice versa. We are one earth family. At the heart of it all, we share the same heartbeat. Breathe to be. We are one.

AWAKENED LIVING

When we are open, life blossoms, just as a flower opens to welcome the morning sun.  We see that the sun, though it is millions of light years away, has a tender yet powerful relationship with the flower, as do the rain and the clouds. From this perspective we see that we are part of the whole. Life is a symphonic masterpiece with which, when we are open, we are completely resonant.

As we come to understand our oneness, we can revel in it with wonder and joy. We can consider in awe how immense it all is. We can let go of the idea that an illusory, isolated sense of self could possibly be in control, and open to an exquisite unfolding of life in absolute perfection. Our actions become not about “me” but about the whole. Each moment is integrated within the whole. No one decision is separate.

When we begin to see that each decision we make affects not just ourselves but everyone and everything on the planet, we act with more compassion. When we have more compassion, we realize the impact of our actions and we naturally want less and practice more kindness. As stewards of the Earth, we each are called to learn to live in harmony with ourselves, each other and our planet. We all breathe the same air and live on the same living organism, our planet. Varied in race and creed, we are all one family, children of the same mother, the planet Earth.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR GRACE

In each moment, there is infinite grace. By becoming more conscious as we practice yoga on the mat, at work, at play or in the nightclub, we let go of the unnecessary and develop greater internal spaciousness which blooms throughout our lives. In this space new life and possibilities arise.

As we rest our awareness on the simple purity and grace of the breath, we realize - we are alive! We let go of wanting things from the future and the past and open to what is here and now. We feel as vast as the sky and rooted in the richness of this moment.

When we “breathe to be”, we understand our interconnection. We see that we are not the doers but a part of the whole, the same energy that is in the flowers and in the stars. We know that our essence is divine - from which we have come, to which we return.
